MALI Drum & Dance Tour

Master Drummer Moussa Traore invites you to travel with him to his native country of Mali, West Africa to study the traditional arts of the people of the great Mali empire.

You will live in the village of Fadjiguila, just 1 mile outside the capital city of Bamako, and study drumming and dancing with members of the nationally recognized Troupe Komi Djossé and the National Ballet of Mali. Your study will include a variety of mediums of Mali’s rich tradition of folk arts, arranged according to your individual interests. You will participate in numerous traditional ceremonies of the Bambara, Malinke, Maraka, Senufo, and Bobo peoples of Mali where you will get to experience first-hand the traditional context of the rhythms and dances you will be learning. You will explore the colorful street markets where artisans craft and sell their goods alongside traditional medicine men and women. Your stay will include an overnight excursion into the Bush to visit the Malinke village of Sébékoro - the heart of Malian jembe drumming - and home to Moussa’s Master teacher, Sega Cissé. There you will experience traditional village life and meet some of the most knowledgeable jembe drummers and dancers in the country. You will also make a day-trip to Kangaba to visit the site of the kingdom of the original ruler of the Mali Empire.

Price of the trip is $1500.

The trip includes:

- Housing

- 3 meals a day

- All ground transportation which includes transport to and from the airport in Mali, all day trips to and from town, ceremonies in accompanying villages and overnight excursions into the Bush.

- Daily dance and drum classes with members of the nationally recognized Troupe Komi Djosse, as well as members of the Natinal Ballet of Mali.

- Instruction in the traditional arts of your choice, including: n'goni and kora, balafon, folk singing with griots, drummaking, Malian cooking, mask-carving, traditional cloth dyeing, batik, weaving, henna body art, and hair weaving.

- Trips to numerous traditional ceremonies, including weddings, baptisms and circumcisions.

-Specially organized ceremonies such as a Malian hunter's celebration as well as a spirit-raising ceremony.

- Performances by local artisits including: griots, folklorists and n'goni players.

- Visits to the rehearsals and performances of local dance and drum companies.

**Length of stay are flexible according to individual needs.

$1400 from NYC or Boston

$1800 from LAX or Seattle

Air Morocco operates slightly more inexpensive flights out of NYC.

A $200 deposit is due at the time of registration.

A $400 deposit is due by October 15, 2002 to secure your place on the trip.

The remaining $900 is due by November 15, 2002.
